old time horse days

hello again , its been snowing again, will spring ever get here? this is the thought as i stood at work, watching the snow fall and the wind carrying it where ever it can, watching the customers coming and going , and to my surprise a lone amish horse and black carriage comes into our drive way , trotting around the building and heads in the opposite direction then they came in, the horse was covered in snow and frosty breath hanging off its muzzle , what a rare sight to see on such a blustry snow day !!! my mind drifted to what it was like when our whole town was founded that way in the 1800s , i wondered ... would we b better off in horse and buggy ? no pollution, no "real vehicle repairs " that would suck us dry , no insurance to pay, no vehicle payments to make, is there someone up there trying to drop us a hint as to how simple life "could be" if we only gave it a chance? why couldnt life b simpler.. is modern living worth losing touch with the past ? how many of us "know " how to farm with a work horse, milk a cow, draw water from a well with a bucket, to make our own foods, how to knit and sew and make our own clothes, sure things were harder , and it took longer, but what if we "had " to survive like they did back then..would we know how? should we know how.. now? i think it would b of our best interest myself, at least we could live on " both side of the fence " if the time ever came to be...

horse tips and ideas

hello all I thought it would b nice to share some tips I have on horses :} some may b old hat and other u may never hear of.. hope u enjoy just the same :} if you have a sick horse that wont drink? try 2 tble spoon of molasses in warm water . to stop horses from eating tree bark in their pasture nail burlap bags or rat wire around them. crushing a wart until it bleeds on ur horse may do some good, it causes antibodies to react to other warts. when ringworm appears .wear gloves and wash the horse in anti dandruff shampoo. a dry shampoo for rugs like woolite works well on horse blankets ...spray on , scrub in throughly, let dry, vacum out . ran out of hoof polish? for a temp fix .. cut a white onion in half rub the raw side into the hoof either the nite before or the morning of the show it will brighten the hoofs. horses who eat dirt are trying to ease the acidity in the stomachs . want to know one of the earliest signs of tetnus disease? its when a horses ears a forward eyes are bright and it has a grinning expression. ran out of absorbine linamint? try using one part alcohol with one part vinager. mix togther spray on body or legs..whatever is sore /stiff. cant afford wraps? use disposable diapers ..to stop hooves and walls and soles from cracking? use hand cream faithfully. adding a cup of cider vinager to horses water is an external fly repellant when they sweat. when cleaning and deoderizing a stall instead of lime try clean cat litter.a cleaned out container of rool on deoderizer can b refiled with fly repellant for ears and face . for a quick plastic glove use a sandwich bag to apply ointments turn inside out and close it up to reuse clean hands :}:} 2 /3 small catfish in a watering tank will keep it free of alge. a horses head is responsible for 90% of the horses balence, did u know the average horse can produce 15/20 pds of manure and urine... each.. a day ? a horse in order to completely digest a meal takes up to 3/4 days .well grded lightening poles near water troughs and hills help reduce the chances of horses getting struck .a wet warm teabag over the eye will help reduce swelling and irratation.to shine silver tack cut a lemon in half sprinkle salt on it and rub onto silver til it shines . for removing chestnuts put vasaline on them at nite by morning they will b soft enough to remove.using dental floss or wax thread is durable enough to repair tack inexpensively. nail hose strips or rubber above the gate latch this stops horse from getting out and helps it from rusting in wet weather . to deter buckety tipper from losing their feed, drill a hole in the bottom lip then nail to wall then put handle through an eye ring .. no more tippers ..hope u have enjoyed these horse tips good luck !!!

My first experience with horses - Navijo

I was 8 yrs old, and i begged, pleaded, promised , anything and everything under the sun, if i could take riding lessons. It was a need that had to b fixed ...finally i was granted to go and take lessons !!! After shown around the barn and horses , I was assigned .. Navahjo. she wasn't the prettiest horse but she was the most trusting with kids.. she was a white appy with little freckles of brown spots ..she had the skimpiest mane , tail and forelock , that was silver . high brown and black socks on all four legs and she had the same outline for a blaze on her face .. she was a carriage horse before, in her early yrs. And could do a carriage trot that was amazing for a long as u wanted her to do.. she was a barn favorite !! It was a war between us kids on who was going to get to ride her .. she was very gentle , careful, and patient with all of us..but don't leave a can of soda around her... she would take the can and down it if u weren't looking and put it right where you left it .. so when you came to take a drink, it would b empty....funny mare !! we would blame each other on who drank the sodas.. until she was caught !! she looked so surprised with a can in her mouth when she was scolded .!! If and when i ever get a horse i hope it will have a little bit of her , just so i will b reminded how special she was ...
